Ocular surface diseases are the ones that affect the most superficial layer of the eye, i.e., the outermost surface of the eye. The outermost layer of the eye gets severely affected in dry eye diseases like drug reaction (called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome), Chemical Injuries and other autoimmune diseases that lead to blindness.

Corneal Transplantation
The cornea is the outermost dome-shaped layer of your eye, which helps in vision by refracting light into the retina. It also protects your eyes from germs, dirt or anything that cause damage to your eye.
If the retina gets damaged or scratched due to injuries or infection and is not able to heal itself, this leads to blindness. In such a case, surgery is required to remove the damaged cornea and replace it with a new cornea donated by a donor.
This surgery is called Corneal transplantation or corneal grafting. If the entire cornea is replaced, it is known as Penetrating Keratoplasty. And, if only part of the cornea is replaced, it is known as Lamellar Keratoplasty.
Corneal eye diseases are among the top four major causes of blindness around the world. In India, many people are severely affected by the disease and this problem aggravates because of the lack of awareness among people about organ donation.
